Modern Times

This section of our history covers Modern Times – from 1964, when Dorothea Pickering moved the Vineyard School to 30 East Saint Helen Street, up until the present time (2026). This period covers the last days of the Vineyard School, through Dorothea’s spiritual exploration to the formation and development of the Fellowship of St Ethelwold. For their work experience placement, three Lower Sixth Form students from Abingdon School – Harry Moore, Alex Warwick and Joe Botha – researched, conducted, and edited 6 interviews with a long-term supporter, current and former Trustees of the Fellowship of St Ethelwold (St Ethelwold’s House). Additionally, they interviewed Robin Ellwood, formerly a pupil of the Vineyard School where he was taught by Dorothea Pickering. The interviews were recorded in St Ethelwold’s House and garden during August 2026. The aim was to give the students some experience of interviewing and to capture some new insights from those who have been long-connected with St Ethelwold’s
